History

The rich history of California agriculture and winemaking is evident everywhere.  The winery, especially the historic structures on the property, represents a snapshot of time and place, and evokes a strong feeling of connection to the past. The high integrity level of the structures and surrounding vineyards encapsulates visitors into a time and place that was so very different from present day.

Gold Rush History

Gold was discovered only 15 minutes from the winery in the town of Coloma by James Marshall. The subsequent rush to the foothills brought many miners and immigrants to the area.  Boeger Winery sits on an 1850's site that was homesteaded by the Fossati-Lombardo family. The original house, cellar and distillery are still used today.

If you look at the door to the old cellar you will see the federal tax stamp that served as the license to distill before the Eighteenth Amendment put an end to the production of alcohol.

Prohibition

During the era of prohibition, the winery continued to produce a little sacramental wine for the local church and enough for the personal use of the Fossati family.   Most of the vines were pulled out though and the land was converted to orchards.  The Fossati’s were stellar producers of high quality pears until a disease rampaged the entire region and the property was sold to the Boegers, to be converted back to vineyards.  Some of the old vines from the 1800’s are still here.

Opening Day for Boeger Winery 1974

Greg and Sue Boeger purchased the ranch in 1972 and started planting vineyards and built a new state-of-the-art-winery the following year.  The old Fossati-Lombardo house was converted into a tasting room and was opened to the public in 1974. For over three decades the Boeger family has dedicated themselves to bringing you some of the Sierra Foothill's finest wines.  The old cellar has recently been restored and is now used for special events and private gatherings.
